Steven Crowder’s “holier than thou” problem

First off, let me say publicly that I have no beef with this man at all. I have never even met him personally. The only thing that I know about him, is what I have read and what I have seen in his videos.

However, I happen to come upon his article on CNN, where he basically comes off sounding like a self-righteous, “Holier than thou” type. Why? Because the guy got married. Again, I have no beef with anyone who decides to take that plunge. However, I have decided that at 40 years old, I just really do not want to bothered with it. I am old, set in my ways; and quite frankly, the way that they are raising women today; with this whole, “Marry him and take him for what he is worth” mentality — and yes, that includes “Church Woman” too — I think I will just pass.

There were two parts to this little piece that really made me sad, for the state of modern-day Christianity; and they were: (H/T HotAir.com)

As my wife (again, still not used to that) and I ate breakfast at a local inn, we discussed how excited we were to start the rest of our lives together, how scary it was that everything was now so different. At the same time, we overheard the table next to us discussing their very own wedding from the night prior. What a coincidence!

“The thing is, nothing’s really changed,” the bride said.

Puzzled, my wife asked, “Did you get married last night too? So did we!”

“Congratulations!” the other dame said. “Yeah we did, just last night.”

“Where’s the groom?” my wife innocently… scratch that, naively asked.

“Oh, he’s sleeping. There was no way he was coming out with me this morning!” She paused and smirked. “Let’s just say that he’s got a lingering headache from a really good time last night.”

My heart sank. Firstly, that poor schmuck’s “good time” was simply getting snookered. Not enjoying the company of close family and long-lost friends with a clear head and clean conscience, not staring in awe at his beautiful new wife, wanting to soak in every glimmer of her eyes as she shot him heart-racing looks from across the dance floor, not taking all of the cheesy pictures as they cut the cake, not even carrying her across that suite threshold as they nervously anticipated their “nightcap.” He probably won’t remember any of it. Instead, he got smashed. He was “that guy”… at his own freaking wedding.

Then I realized something. Our wedding was truly a once in a lifetime event. It was a God’s-honest celebration of two completely separate lives now becoming one. Physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually, everything that made us who we were individually was becoming what bonded us together. Our family traveled from far and wide to celebrate the decision of two young people to truly commit themselves to each other, and selflessly give themselves to one another in a way that they never had before that very night.

The people next to us that morning? Well, theirs was just one big party.  And the morning after? Just another hangover.

Our “weddings” were the same event in name only. They know it, and we know it.

Yes, what a way to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to a lost and dying world; than to come off sounding like smug, self-righteous, holier than thou, religious idiot! You would think that the least that ol’ “virgin boy” here could have done would have been to at least Pray for this person; and maybe, just MAYBE offer them a Gospel tract.

Another line that really disappointed me was this one here:

Oops. Did I just make a “judgment?”  You’re darn right I did.

Yes, Steven, you did; and you also broke one of the most common commandments in the Bible, quoting the Words of our Lord:

Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Oh and there is more:

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: — (Luke 6:37 KJV)

and…:

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. — (John 7:24 KJV)

Steven, There is a reason why I write this and why I took issue with your statements. It is found in the Old Testament:

 

For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. (Isaiah 64:4-8 KJV)

You see Steven; if it were not for Grace, you and myself would be hell bound sinners; just like the rest of the World. While it is great that you kept yourself until marriage. I would not let that go to your head. When writing this blog posting, I was reminded on a Bible passage that really came to mind. I am referring to this one:

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. God help me not to become….that.

I admit it, I made some mistakes when I was younger; I cannot change that. However it does irk me to see those, who have done it right to act like they are so much better than anyone else. It is un-Christlike in way and it should not happen. Humility goes a long way; it seems that humility anymore, in the Christian would is old hat and out of date. Nowadays, we have people boasting about the fact that they are so Holy and Righteous. When in fact, the only thing that gives them access to the Kingdom of God is the blood of Jesus Christ. If, that said person even has that — Salvation. I stop short at judgement; however some of the people that claim Christ, really make this Christian of 30 years, really wonder about that.
