Sad News: Pink Floyd Founder Member Richard Wright has died

This awfully sad story via The New York Times:

LONDON (AP) — Richard Wright, a founding member of the rock group Pink Floyd, died Monday. He was 65.

Pink Floyd’s spokesman, Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist, said Wright died after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. He says the band member’s family did not want to give more details about his death.

Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and joined their early band, Sigma 6. Along with the late Syd Barrett, the four formed Pink Floyd in 1965.

The group’s jazz-infused rock and drug-laced multimedia ”happenings” made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and their 1967 album, ”The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,” was a hit.

In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Barrett, was seen as the group’s dominant musical force. The London-born musician and son of a biochemist wrote songs and played the keyboard.

”Rick’s keyboards were an integral park of the Pink Floyd sound,” said Joe Boyd, a prominent record producer who worked with Pink Floyd early in its career.

This indeed is very sad news. I’ve listened to Pink Floyd for years.

Here’s a great video of theirs:

May he rest in peace.

Sad News: Writer Davis Foster Wallace found dead

You know, I know that this Blog is mainly about politics. But this one is more personal to me. Whenever a writer, irregardless of his political stance, dies. I always feel horrible about it. Yes, it bothers me to see when another pen is silenced in this trade.

The La Times, The AP, and The New York Observer are all reporting that writer David Fostor Wallace has committed suicide. He died from hanging himself. His wife discovered him upon returning to her house. He was only 46 years old.

Quoting the New York Observer:

Infinite Jest author David Foster Wallace is dead of an apparent suicide, according to reports from the Associated Press, The Los Angeles Times and others.

According to AP:

Wallace’s wife found her husband had hanged himself when she returned home about 9:30 p.m. Friday, said Jackie Morales, a records clerk with the Claremont Police Department.

Wallace taught creative writing and English at nearby Pomona College.

Mr. Wallace, who received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 1997, just saw the release of McCain’s Promise: Aboard the Straight Talk Express David Foster Wallace, a book-length expansion of his 2000 campaign report about Republican presidential nominee John McCain. A film version of his book Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is in production with The Office‘s John Krasinski adapting and directing.

The La Times Says:

Gary Kates, the college’s dean, called Wallace’s death “an incredible loss.”

“He was a fabulous teacher,” Kates said Saturday. “He was hands-on with his students. He cared deeply about them. . . . He was a jewel on the faculty, and we deeply appreciated everything he gave to the college.”

In addition to his wife, Karen Green, and his parents, Wallace is survived by a sister.

A memorial service is planned at Pomona College.

My heart breaks for his family. I cannot being to fathom the loss that his wife, parents and siblings are feeling. My thoughts and prayers are with this man’s family during this horrible time of loss. God Bless them.

Like I said, Politics is one thing, but a human life is another. It’s something that we do not value anymore. May this man truly rest in the peace that he was searching for.

Here are all of his works that I could find:

May we never forget…

This is not a day for writing or Blogging or Political Discourse. It is a day of solemn remembrance.

Some Photos:

It was a day, that I personally will never forget.

63384_11_7_2007_2_26_38_AM_-_iwo-9-11-final

It was a day that, at first, brought this Nation together as one, but in the end, divided us. Conservatives against Liberals, Liberals against Conservatives.

9.11 Victim

It was a day of courage, bravery and incredible loss.

National_Park_Service_9-11_Statue_o

It was the day when the war on terror, came to our shores.

Sept14_BushBeckwithBullhorn

It was a day, when a President rallied a Nation together and for a time it seemed, would catch those who carried out these attacks.

It has been said, that an image or a picture can capture more than any printed work could possible ever hope to convey. I give you these in that very spirit:

THE PRESIDENTgwbush9-11-01speech: Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.

A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the  foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we’re the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America — with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government’s emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it’s prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I’ve directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.”

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night, and God bless America.

“No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to  absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” — The White House, December 8, 1941

God Bless The United States of America and to the Republic for which our Constitution and Lady Liberty stands.

A couple songs, that I feel are pertinent to this subject:

Frustration

I am writing you all, because I am frustrated.  Frustrated because there is a situation that there is nothing that I can do about.

Today, at 5:00 A.M. this morning, my Dad’s oldest sister died of an apparent Heart Attack.  Her name was Margaret Mahan.  (Her Maiden Name is Margaret Adkins).  She had a rough life.  Honestly, outside of my Dad, her family quite honestly did not give two flips about her.  She married, to a scum of a man, his name was Tom, who beat her and mistreated her only son, to the point of trying to drown the boy, when he was five years old.  Finally, after a couple years of marriage, Tom left one day supposedly to go to the store.  Tom never returned.  The family found out much later in life that Tom had been in and out of several psycho wards.  Tom showed up, in a wheelchair.  He did not stick around long, after his wheelchair fraud was foiled by a family member who caught him walking.

Therefore, now, Margaret is now dead, a pauper.  Oh, she will get a 15-minute memorial service, with no casket, and just a simple picture on a stand.  There will be no formal funeral, and she will be buried in a pauper’s tomb, with five other people.

Where do I fit into all this?  It is my family; I am the son of my Father.  I was the kid, who was supposed to be the person who was supposed to go to college, really make it big in life and get rich and help my family.  That never happened.  Because of this, she will die, treated like anyone else in her position.

I did not write this to hit you all up for money.  Even I am not that much of a shameless fool.  I wrote this to vent, vent because my desire to help my family and my utter inability to do so.

Do with it, what thou wilt.

This one is for Brother Hayes

Politics is one thing, real life is another….

In case you haven’t heard. We lost another legend.

Enjoy this video, it captures a master at his trade, at his best. This is “Stormy Monday”…

His List of accomplishments include:

Hayes was a longtime songwriter and arranger for Stax Records in Memphis, playing in the studio’s backup band and crafting tunes for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s.

He released his first solo album in 1967, and his 1969 follow-up, “Hot Buttered Soul,” became a platinum hit.

In 1971, the theme from “Shaft” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme.

Hayes won a third Grammy for pop instrumental performance with the title track to his 1972 “Black Moses” album.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Isaac Hayes music embodied the black experience, Issac asked in his hit tune “Shaft”, “can you dig it?” and to that I simply say, yes, we all dug it, on some sort of a level or another.

I am sure that some asshole White, High-brow, Conservative and some other Conservative Minority will snivel at this man and dismiss him as a Liberal who promoted Identity Politics, But he was about so much more than that.

I, for one, am quite sorry to learn of his passing, an era in music has just ended. 🙁

May he rest in peace.

Comic Actor Bernie Mac dead at age 50

Such a tragic story. 🙁

The Story: Comic actor Bernie Mac dies at age 50- CNN.com

Comic actor Bernie Mac died early Saturday of complications from pneumonia, according to a family member and his publicist. He was 50.
Bernie Mac

He had been hospitalized in Chicago, Illinois, for more than a week with the lung infection.

Danica Smith, the comedian’s publicist, had said Thursday that Mac’s condition was “stable,” The Associated Press reported.

“When I got the call this morning, it was just devastating news,” said Chicago Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster. “Let’s face it: Bernie Mac was one of a kind. He was the best of the best in terms of giving you a good laugh

Politics is one thing, but real life is another. 50 years old is such a young age to die. A talent taken, way too soon. My Prayers and thoughts go out to the family.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn has died

It seems that the World has lost another great writer.

Via CNN : Alexander Solzhenitsyn has died

Quote:

Russian novelist and historian Alexander Solzhenitsyn, whose works detailed the horrors of Stalin’s Soviet labor camps, has died at 89, Russian news agencies reported Monday.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn addresses parliament in 1994, the year he returned to Russia after two decades in exile.

His son, Stepan Solzhenitsyn, told The Associated Press his father died of heart failure late Sunday at his home near Moscow, Russia.

Awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970 for “The First Circle,” Alexander Solzhenitsyn was considered a moral voice for Russia. His works centered on issues of good and evil, materialism and salvation.

His three-volume “Gulag Archipelago” unveiled the horrors of the Soviet labor camps, where he himself was imprisoned for eight years.

Even as a child, without any prompting from others, I wanted to be a writer and, indeed, I turned out a good deal of the usual juvenilia,” Solzhenitsyn

Even so, Solzhenitsyn, who served in the Russian Army during World War II, spent much of his life as a mathematician said in a short autobiography written for the Nobel Foundation.

It is truly always sad to hear, when a writer dies. This profession is dying by the way. This man also had the courage to stand up against something that he knew was wrong.

May he rest in peace.
