The Tuesday Music Express – Special Memorial Edition – Presents: Woody Guthrie

No Christmas tree was ever again allowed in Mary Krainatz’s Upper Peninsula home.

The sight of a decorated fir tree, resplendent with colorful ornaments, yuletide cheers and the gaiety of children, reminded her of a Christmas Eve she longed to forget.

Seventy-three people, the majority of them children younger than 10, died in a stampede after someone supposedly yelled “fire” during a holiday get-together for striking miners in Calumet on Dec. 24, 1913. Krainatz’s 11-year-old daughter, also named, Mary, was among those killed when people rushed for the staircase down to the first floor.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the tragedy, a time of remembrance in a small Copper Country community where no survivors remain to share their firsthand accounts.

A ceremony, including a reading of the names of the deceased, will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the site of where the Italian Hall once stood at Seventh and Elm. Now, a park is punctuated by the sandstone block archway that once served as the building’s entrance. A white, silk lily for each victim pays silent testament in Calumet’s Village Hall.

The pre-holiday horror was immortalized in the Woody Guthrie song “1913 Massacre,” a 2001 opera, a book by Birmingham lawyer Steve Lehto and the documentary “Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913” that debuted on PBS earlier this month. — Source

May this be a reminder to all my Conservative and Tea Party friends that dishonest, crony capitalism hurts people; this being a perfect example.

Dave Mustaine, Chris Broderick & Co. were joined by Jenny Lewis, who accompanies the band on a metal version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” But we think you’ll enjoy all the holiday classics on the (again: fake) album.

I have to say that seeing Dave Mustaine… in a sweater is too funny. 😀 Anyone who knows anything remotely about Mustaine and Megadeth knows why.

Video: Charles Krauthammer gets it right

He is, of course, talking about the budget deal. The budget deal that everyone else hates. I say l let ’em hate it. The corner says this:

“The only choice of those who would reject the deal would be to go up until the deadline of January 15th,” he said on Special Report, “and the only leverage Republicans would have would be to shut down the government.

“We tried that in October. It was a disaster,” Krauthammer said, arguing that that the news stories in January would have been about such a shutdown, not Obamacare’s continuing problems. Rejecting the spending deal, he said, would have been “mindless.”

Krauthammer praised the GOP for taking the deal, lauding them for preserving 70 percent of the sequester cuts over the next two years and ending the “endless extension of unemployment benefits.”

I said the same thing back when the shutdown was happening; it was a bad idea. Why punish those who are just going to work everyday? It was a stupid idea. Ted Cruz did not have a plan, once he took the House Republicans into the ditch.  This compromise was a smart idea, and it will buy the Republicans some time, till after the election. Hopefully, the new ones coming in will play the right political game and not the wrong one again.
