In the 16-count indictment, Jefferson was charged with soliciting bribes and other crimes for a series of schemes in which he helped American businesses broker deals in West African in exchange for payments or financial considerations to companies controlled by members of his family, including his brother Mose, his wife, Andrea, their five daughters and a son-in-law.
William Jefferson - Shakedown Artist
Jefferson, 62, who represented the New Orleans-based 2nd Congressional District for nine terms, will now face sentencing by Judge T.S. Ellis III, who earlier meted out stiff sentences for lesser figures in the case. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Jefferson faced 235 years in prison if convicted on all counts, and will still face substantial prison time.
Prosecutors asked that Jefferson be held as a flight risk, but the judge allowed him to remain free pending his sentencing scheduled for Oct. 30. A forfeiture hearing will be held Thursday to decide what assets Jefferson will have to surrender.
The verdict comes four years after the Aug. 3, 2005 raids of Jefferson’s homes in New Orleans and Washington, D.C., in which the FBI found $90,000 in cash hidden in the freezer of his D.C. home, money the government said Jefferson was going to deliver as a bribe to Atiku Abubakar, then vice president of Nigeria, to gain his help with a telecommunications deal in Nigeria being pursued by Lori Mody, a Northern Virginia businesswoman.
The money was the lion’s share of $100,000 in FBI cash that the congressman was videotaped receiving packed in a briefcase days earlier in a suburban Virginia parking lot from Mody, who, beginning in March of 2005, had become a cooperating witness for the FBI, secretly taping her conversations with Jefferson.
The jury did not find him guilty on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which was the count linked to the money in the freezer.
While Mody did not testify at the trial, the jury heard segments of her taped conversations with Jefferson along with more than six weeks of testimony from government witnesses, including iGate Inc. CEO Vernon Jackson and Mody financial adviser Brett Pfeffer, both of whom are serving time after pleading guilty to their involvement in the bribe schemes, and hoped to see their sentences reduced in exchange for their testimony against Jefferson.
Jefferson did not testify in his own defense and his formal defense lasted only about two hours. In his closing argument, lead defense attorney Robert Trout presented his client as a man whose dealings had placed him in an ethical “gray” area, but who had not broken the law.
I will simply say this; as a non-partisan Conservative blogger who knows full well that there is corruption on both sides of the aisle, I will simply say this. I am very pleased that this man was caught. I only hope now that it does not stop this guy; but rather continues with others that are extremely corrupt up on capital hill.
Exit question: How long till the race baiters like Al Sharpton come out saying that this bust was racially motivated?
Watch and learn. The most important lesson is, “Do not play games with the system.” You will lose every time. Force the game players to come to you, to be honest, moral and independent. The losers in the Cambridge game are pre-determined. They are meant to be the police sergeant who arrested the professor, the entire Cambridge Police Department, and police departments everywhere.
If he continues to play the game, he loses. It is pre-determined.
I would like to applaud President Obama for bringing Sergeant Crowley, me and our families together. I would also like to thank the President for welcoming my father, Henry Louis Gates, Sr., who for most of his life has been a Republican! My dad turned 96 this past June, and the fact that he worked two jobs every day is the reason that my brother, Dr. Paul Gates, and I were able to receive such splendid educations. I am honored that he chose to join me at the White House, along with my fiancée, my daughters, and my brother.
Sergeant Crowley and I, through an accident of time and place, have been cast together, inextricably, as characters – as metaphors, really – in a thousand narratives about race over which he and I have absolutely no control. Narratives about race are as old as the founding of this great Republic itself, but these new ones have unfolded precisely when Americans signaled to the world our country’s great progress by overcoming centuries of habit and fear, and electing an African American as President. It is incumbent upon Sergeant Crowley and me to utilize the great opportunity that fate has given us to foster greater sympathy among the American public for the daily perils of policing on the one hand, and for the genuine fears of racial profiling on the other hand.
Let me say that I thank God that I live in a country in which police officers put their lives at risk to protect us every day, and, more than ever, I’ve come to understand and appreciate their daily sacrifices on our behalf. I’m also grateful that we live in a country where freedom of speech is a sacrosanct value and I hope that one day we can get to know each other better, as we began to do at the White House this afternoon over beers with President Obama.
Thank God we live in a country where speech is protected, a country which guarantees and defends my right to speak out when I believe my rights have been violated; a country that protects us from arrest when we do express our views, no matter how unpopular.
And thank God that we have a President who can rise above the fray, bridge age-old differences and transform events such as this into a moment in the evolution of our society’s attitudes about race and difference. President Obama is a man who understands tolerance and forgiveness, and our country is blessed to have such a leader.
[…]
Having spent my academic career trying to bridge differences and promote understanding among Americans, I can report that it is far more comfortable being the commentator than being commented upon. At this point, I am hopeful that we can all move on, and that this experience will prove an occasion for education, not recrimination. I know that Sergeant Crowley shares this goal. Both of us are eager to go back to work tomorrow. And it turns out that the President just might have a few other things on his plate as well.
Great, now can we just please move on to something a bit more important? Like that fact Obama’s Poll numbers are dropping, or the fact that Obama’s HealthCare plan is going down in flames? Or at least something, at bit more substantive?
Because the silly stuff has about me got me great to take vacation from Blogging; Seriously.
At the same time, there may be emotional and practical limits to public patience when confronted with the anti-white vibes of those whom the masses empowered. The public reaction to Obama’s statements about the police “behaving stupidly” in dealing with Gates made me think that while voters will put up with a leftist black president who pushes quotas, they don’t want him to show his true feelings too openly. Obama pushed the envelope, by taking the side of a mouthy race-hustler against an immaculately liberal white policeman and his black fellow-officer. What then happened indicates that some white people are suddenly beginning to wake up to political reality.
D.J. Drummond has written a well written piece on race relations. I agree with the majority of it; However one little part did not resonate with me well at all.
The first requirement for a racial dialogue is mutual respect by and for all parties.
Mr. Drummond, I will start respecting the Negro race, when they stop blaming me and all Anglo-Saxon Americans for the problems in their own communities. Further more, I will start respecting the Negro race when they stop blaming me personally for things that happened before I was even born. Things like Slavery and the racial discrimination in the south.
Further more, I will start respecting the Negro community when they stop with the damn grievance-mongering that goes on constantly; mainly in the Negro Liberal Circles. After all, it was the Republican Party that set them free. But no; the Negro Community was not satisfied with that. They had to have more, so, they were given affirmative action; a program that allowed for the legal discrimination of Anglo-Saxon Americans; commonly known as White People.
It was said, long ago, among those who were opposed to the ending of the slave trade; that “If we give them an inch, they will take a mile.” Something that it very true amongst the Liberals and the Minority crowd. I am afraid that those people were absolutely correct.
Racist you say? No, not hardly. More like a Realist.
Yet it takes a good dose of rationalization to convince oneself that something only racial is “racist.” This may be easy for the left, but for those on the right it probably takes a bit more effort. After all, many liberals are so detached from reality, so solipsistic and relativistic, that they mistake their feelings for Truth. They have the lie on retainer. Conservatives, on the other hand, embrace it only occasionally, as a consultant.
Another difference between the right and left is that we traditionalists know we’re called to be better than that. We know that the Truth will not only set us free and carry the day when the last chapter is written, but that it’s all we have. The lie will never serve us like it does the liars. That is, unless, as they have done, we make it our master.
And the Truth is the point. Whenever we peddle that lie called the race card, we contribute to the mass delusion and lessen the chances that the Truth will be known, all for some momentary political gain. We trade something beautiful for thirty pieces of silver. Liberals make this a practice, and it’s why they’re contemptible. But, remember, silver is all they have.
As for my friends on the right, for the moment, I could be even madder at you. After all, your trespass is the greater. You forced me to defend Barbara Boxer.
A video has surfaced on YouTube of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. delivering a church speech in which he uses the N-word, rails against “racist historically white institutions in America” and accuses Newt Gingrich of attempting to block blacks from entering the middle class.
Gates became a lightning rod of racial controversy when President Obama defended the professor handcuffed in his home last week by police in Cambridge, Mass.
“We are trying to end what we call the one n-gger syndrome – you know, this place ain’t big enough for more than one of us,” said Gates in the video, which was filmed in 1999 in the All Souls Church in Washington, D.C.
“Without affirmative action we would have never been able to integrate racist historically white institutions in American society”
“I taught at Duke for one long painful year, I don’t even like the airplane to flyover North Carolina…Because of racism I never would have been allowed to compete with white boys and white girls”
Contract with America and Newt Gingrich “set up barriers so no more of you all could get in here”

So much for Dr. Kings vision of a colorblind society
I doubt if most people after watching this would want to go have a beer with him…
This is one of Obama friends. Like Mr. Pundit said here, this guy and Jeremiah Wright most likely were friends. Lord knows, they think much alike. I wonder if President Obama will throw Mr. Gates under the bus too?
ACORN and their new front group Act Now were pwned by Tea Party Patriots again on Long Island!
When they couldn’t win their arguments with facts, the ACORN employees tried to intimidate the Tea Party folks. No way that could work with dedicated Patriots! So ACORN cut and run when the going got tough, and repeated that sorry performance twice in one day.
[…]
I’m no reporter so bear with me. Today I felt the same pride inside me matching the feeling I get whenever I read of our Founding Fathers’ activism. It might sound over exaggerated, but it doesn’t change how I feel. Today we scored a victory some may see as trivial, I see as momentous. Either way as a patriot it is overwhelming. Today I witnessed and participated in seeing ‘grass-roots folk’ come together in an instant and square off with, as of yesterday, an unchallenged foe in our cause-ACORN. We arrived at King Kullen this morning in Commack and as planned found ACORN petitioners signing up unaware patrons of the shopping center coming and going. They were asking people to sign a petition favoring Obama’s Health Care plan. We were there to give the other side and people listened.
ACORN produced four ‘workers’ we amassed 40 patriots complete with signs, banners, flyers, stickers, posters and a few loud voices.
ACORN 4 – Patriots 40.
I was told they were ‘workers’ for the organization We-Can(?) We were the people on the street giving up a beautiful warm Saturday morning to be heard.
I once read that 1 man defending his home is worth 20 paid mercenaries sent to destroy it. Believe it.
ACORN being outnumbered, out voiced and literally out debated left the area in a hurry. We followed.
After receiving communication that they fled to Stop and Shop in Bohemia 40+ patriots showed up and overwhelmed them there too. What a sight. Again ACORN took flight. They didn’t know how to react other then demanding we leave. We demanded an equal moment of time to discuss the meat and potatoes of the Obama health Care plan, they refused and retreated. I witnessed many passersby refusing to sign their petition; one even scratched their name off the list after we spoke to them. Almost every person I encountered was interested and I was relieved as almost all agreed with us. There was a little drama when a passerby vehemently argued for the plan, it was contentious but that’s liberty and democracy at work.
The only news agency seen was a local group from Alternative News based here on LI. The police were on scene, but remained out of the way as we did our own policing and respecting of the peace.
Score this a huge victory. I hope this inspires everyone to get up and get off the side-lines. You want change, than be silent no more! Silence is another form of consent, don’t be silent-don’t consent.
Known organizations present and represented: Campaign for Liberty, CSA, 9/11 Glenn Beck group, and resistnet.com by me. Others were ordinary people who heard last night and dropped their plans and showed up. What a moment.
Ever notice what color them liberal acorn thugs were?
The reason I bring this up is because real White Liberals are not the ones who will run out into the trenches and do the dirty work. They let their resident useful idiots get out there do the hard work; African-Americans! Sort of a 21 century plantation operation. Why do they do this? Because the Democratic Party, has been using the African-American vote since the 1960’s. To do this, they employ people like Al Sharpton to keep stirring the waters of Racial hatred toward the white people; to somehow convince them that the “White Man” is keeping them down.
You would think that they could have at least come a bit more prepared than this though.
Hope! Change! Intimidation! The Brave New World under the Faux Post Racial President. President Bambi Teleprompter!
I have got to hand it to the Conservative Blogsophere. When they put their minds to it. They can do a kick butt job of dirt digging on people. It is absolutely amazing to me. These guys put the MSM to God-awful shame.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr controls a tax-exempt, non-profit charity, Inkwell Foundation, Inc, that managed to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct support in one year, yet only gave out $27,500 in grants, the bulk of which went to Gates’ employees and Harvard colleagues. Also, as recently as September 2008, the Boston Globe reported that Gates’ charity was not in compliance with the law for failing to register the proper paperwork, despite the charity existing since 2005. The charge at the time was that it was “bogus,” as you’ll see below. In fact, the state Attorney General’s office told the Globe the charity was likely either inactive, or dissolved. Yet, documents below show the charity is healthy, wealthy and active.
Is it possible that Henry Louis Gates, Jr. was acting strange when law enforcement showed up at his door because he didn’t want the story below to come out? It may take a tax lawyer to answer that question, but based on this research, it can’t be ruled out. We know the press has questioned Gates about the charity in the past and gotten no response.
There is much more to this story, Please head over to Dan’s Place to read it all.
This would be the ultimate take-down of the century. But I highly doubt that the Feds will do anything. As it is right now; we have a local police Dept being accused of racism. The last thing that Bambi Teleprompter needs is some pissed black man accusing him of using the Government to target him. That would not be a good thing for the Democratic Party. Seeing that they’re already losing on healthcare.
Anyhow, Here’s the roundup of the Blogs on the subject:
In any case, it’s strange how proggies can be so concerned about their privacy whilst selling out ours to all kinds of intrusive government agencies. I think that Gates should feel fortunate that the cops weren’t asking for his Real ID.
Now that’s funny! :rotfl: Quite true. But very funny. 😀
So, let’s put this together. There was gross, rampant, institutionalized racism at one time in the United States. Since then, we’ve had plenty of people of all ethnic backgrounds arrive in academia and in society who are anointed to preach the evils of the path, and, purportedly, lead us into some shiny, post-racial future.
What Are The Entry Criteria For That Future?
When do we take the police report at face value, and just admit that somebody was disorderly? Because it looks more as though we’ve simply got a priesthood that is going to manufacture the occasional ritual to perpetuate itself, becoming the very thing it set out to despise.
Now for my take on this whole thing. Here is the straight out truth. Mr. Gates, who is black, is trying to start something; because he is black. It is obvious to me, that this whole thing could have been avoided, if Gates would have just had done what he was told, and kept his mouth shut. Had he heeded the Officers instructions, none of this would have ever happened. But instead Gates decided that he was going to try and play the “oppressed negro” card and get himself arrested; all so Mr. Gates could get into the headlines and go to court and make him some easy money.
Since I am known for my controversy; let me remind Mr. Gates of something here. Mr. Gates you are damned lucky that you were not in Alabama and that this is not the 1950’s. Because if it were, the media would most likely be reporting about your dead corpse being found on the side of the road or face down in a river, with a bullet in your head. Which, in all honesty; is most likely were you really belong. You ought to once and a while say a little prayer for the life of privilege that you lead. Because there was a time sir, when the real founders of this Country actually RULED this land and people like you; were taken care of and not in very nice ways. You should think about that, once in a while. Just a thought.
I think that it is a damned shamed that the very people, whom the Republican Party fought long and hard to free from Slavery, are now acting like Tyrants and acting like the entire Anglo-Saxon race owes them a favor. I have to believe that of President Abraham Lincoln would have known this, he would have never bothered with them at all. Sometimes I think it is too bad, that we cannot go back and change that history.
A black police officer who was at Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s home when the black Harvard scholar was arrested says he fully supports how his white fellow officer handled the situation.
Sgt. Leon Lashley says Gates was probably tired and surprised when Sgt. James Crowley demanded identification from him as officers investigated a report of a burglary. Lashley says Gates’ reaction to Crowley was “a little bit stranger than it should have been.”
Asked if Gates should have been arrested, Lashley said supported Crowley “100 percent.”
Gates has said he was the victim of racial profiling.
However, watch this video, watch this man’s body language:
Also, since when does being outside; and being loud with a Police officer constitute a reason to be arrested? If the man was no danger to then public or the officers on the scene, then why was he even arrested?
Could it be that the Union threatened this black police officer and told him, that if spoke against the arresting officer, that he would pay for it? Something is fishy. I could be wrong, but still the explanation for his reason for being arrested just does not wash with me, at all. Sorry, but being an insulting ass toward a police officer; is not a valid reason for arrest. Because if that was the case, I would be in jail! :rotfl:
Something just does not add up here. I cannot quite put my finger on it. True, the Harvard guy was being an asshole. But the officer was not one hundred percent right either here.
