Cash for Clunkers; Clunks out — Update:Feds trying to salvage program — Update: House Passes 2 Billion "C for C" Bill

This is a bit a humorous story.

Via Wall Street Journal:

White House officials and lawmakers were studying late Thursday how to keep alive the government’s cash-for-clunkers incentive program because of concerns the program’s $1 billion budget may have been exhausted after just one week.

Obama administration officials warned congressional leaders Thursday it planned to suspend the program at midnight. But the White House released a statement late Thursday saying that completed deals would be honored and the program is still under review.

Cash for Clunkers Runs Out of Gas

A White House official said, “We are working tonight to assess the situation facing what is obviously an incredibly popular program. Auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that all valid [cash-for-clunker] transactions that have taken place to-date will be honored.”

Lawmakers are discussing with White House officials where to find funding — including possibly tapping the government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, a congressional aide said.

The clunkers program, which offers rebates of up to $4,500 to consumers who trade in old vehicles and buy new, more fuel-efficient models, began July 24 and sparked a surge in car sales.

“It was an absolute success,” said Michael J. Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc., the U.S.’s largest chain of auto dealerships. “There’s a very compelling case the government should put more money into it. It’s a great stimulus to the economy.”

There much just be such a thing as a program working too well. Mike Hendrix points out that Cato is pointing out a way to use the money to buy a classic car.  One little problem with that whole idea; well, a few actually. For one, it is dishonest; and I always thought that Conservatives were the upstanding ones and the Democrats were the lying, cheating criminals and thieves. Just a thought guys. Second of all, I am sure the Government, somehow or another; is going to keep track of how long you own the car, possibly by keep track of how long you have the title in your possession. So, if you get a car and turn around and off it. I am sure the Government is going to want their money back.  Even if it is not spelled out anywhere; I would not want to take my chances. I figure, the less the Government knows about me and desires to speak with me; the better.

However, there is late breaking news that that people behind the scenes are trying desperately to keep the program running:

The Obama administration and Capitol Hill sources told NBC News that efforts are underway to protect the auto sales incentive program, also known as “Cash for Clunkers.”

Although key members of Congress were notified by the Secretary of Transportation Thursday that the program would run out of money at midnight, sources said “Administration and Congressional officials are working to keep it up and running.”

The program has exhausted its authorized funding of nearly $1 billion in less than a week but officials say “it is not suspended.”

The program, which had been expected to run through Sept. 30, was designed to spur U.S. auto sales through consumer incentives.

“Cash for clunkers” authorized up to $4,500 in rebates for car buyers who traded in their gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The government launched the program on July 24 and said late on Thursday that sales and pending sales had neared the limit of 250,000 vehicles.

Some of my fellow Conservatives are he-hawing about how funny that this is; and that it is a waste of money. Well, I guess I must be funny. Put me in the bracket of people that say, “Hey if it’s working, it’s working!”  I am not a fan prime of pumping of the economy. But if people start buying cars again and the economy comes back to life. I am all for it. Sorry guys, I just remind unconvinced that this is waste or that it is somehow hurting the economy.

Update: Via Politico:

Congress is moving quickly to save the depleted cash-for-clunkers program, as the House passed a $2 billion spending measure Friday afternoon that would keep alive a program that has encouraged American car owners to trade in their old gas guzzlers for more fuel efficient vehicles.

Despite some criticism from Republicans who called the legislation another bailout for another industry, the bill easily passed on a 316-109 bipartisan vote.

Under the fast-track bill, Democratic leaders will use funds from a renewable energy loan guarantee included in the stimulus. The bill would extend the program through Sept. 30, 2010. Democrats have portrayed the run on cash for clunkers cash as a great success for the $1 billion program, which allows car owners to turn in older, less fuel efficient cars for a $4,500 rebate to purchase higher gas mileage vehicles.

The Senate path will be more complicated, as the upper chamber will have to work through a dispute between Michigan lawmakers who want more generous terms on gas mileage than California senators seeking higher fuel efficiency rules. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), has already posted a message on her Twitter account saying she won’t support transferring stimulus money to cash for clunkers. The $2 billion is not new money since it is being transferred from an existing renewable energy program.

Both Republicans and Democrats talked about how local dealerships across the country have been flooded with interest from car owners who want to dump their older vehicles and use the free $4,500 rebate to help purchase new, fuel efficient cars. But the government re-imbursement of car dealers has been inefficient, and lawmakers have criticized the program’s slowness in sending those rebates to auto dealers who have fronted the rebate money for car buyers.

“Cash for Clunkers may have run out of cash, but America’s consumers haven’t run out of clunkers. We’re going to work with the Obama administration to keep this wildly successful program going until it reaches its goal of helping consumers take 1 million gas guzzlers off the road,” said Rep. Ed. Markey (D-Mass.), who co-authored the legislation.

Some Republicans have already started objecting to the bill, saying it’s yet another bailout for a specific industry. But Republicans like Pete Hoekstra of Michigan and John Campbell of California have already spoken in favor of the bill in Friday afternoon floor speeches.

You see this is why the Republican Party is being painted by the left as the “Party of No.” Because something that is actually working; the Republicans are against it. Because it is supposedly a “Bail Out” of the auto industry. Oh Please, it is enabling those, who would not otherwise be able to afford a newer car. I know feeling, working a job, but not making quite enough to afford a new car. This is helping people out. Now truthfully, this program would not help me out. As I am not working; and I could not afford the car payment. But if I was; I would jump on the chance to get one of these vouchers.

Sometimes I think that some Republicans need to step back away from their ideology for a second, and see something in it’s broader terms. This inability to do this, is why the Republican Party lost in 2008 and will possibly in 2012 as well.

Senator Chris Dodd has prostate cancer, prognosis is so far so good

Right in the middle of a somewhat positive news day, comes this:

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) has been diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer, a condition that is not considered life-threatening, according to his staff.

Dodd’s political adviser Jim Jordan emails me:

“The condition was caught extremely early; the procedure will be as routine as it can be; He’ll be down, out of commission for just two or three [weeks]; his health is otherwise superb; this in no way whatsoever affects his re-election plans.”

Dodd spokeswoman Colleen Flanagan reported the same and says the procedure will be performed sometime in August and that Dodd discovered the cancer during a routine screening and has had “not symptoms whatsoever.”

I am just going to say this; and I am sure that some Conservative Blogger or some idiot Liberal Blogger is going to read this and try say that I am fake Conservative or something stupid like that. Well, two words for ’em; Screw ’em.

Politics and the realm of Political Blogging is one thing. But, real life is another. My best wishes to Senator Dodd and his family during this time period. I know too well, what kind of thief and destroyer of life that cancer is. Let’s just say my family knows much about it.

Get well soon Senator; so I can whoop up on ya on the blog here! 😉 😀 😛

Quote of the Day

There is no evidence Iran has built the cascade to raise LEU to highly enriched weapons-grade uranium, or that the facilities even exist to do this. The Iranian regime has declared it has no intention of building nuclear weapons, indeed, that their possession would be a violation of Koranic law.

And the United States has not rescinded its own National Intelligence Estimate of 2007 that Iran, in 2003, abandoned its weapons program.

Israel has been saying for years an Iranian bomb is months away.

Where is the proof? Where is the evidence to justify a new U.S. war in the Middle East to destroy weapons of mass destruction that may not exist in Iran, as they did not exist in Iraq?

Iran may wish to have a nuclear deterrent, considering what happened to neighbor Iraq, which did not. But the idea that the regime, having built a nuclear weapon, would launch it on Tel Aviv and bring massive retaliation by scores of Israeli nukes on Teheran and other cities, killing millions of Iranians and all the leaders and their families of all factions of this disputatious people, seems like total madness.

For Israel to launch a war on such reasoning would seem to meet Bismarck’s definition of preemptive war as “committing suicide out of fear of death.”

America lived for decades under a threat of nuclear annihilation. We relied on a policy of containment and deterrence, outlasted the Soviet regime in a 40-year Cold War, and are now at peace with Russia.

Ahmadinejad is not so tough a customer as Stalin, Khrushchev or Mao, who talked of accepting 300 million dead in a nuclear exchange. Moreover, Ahmadinejad has no nukes, no authority to take Iran to war, and is looking like a very lame duck before his second term has begun.

And when one looks to U.S. and Iranian interests, they coincide as much as they conflict. Iran detested the Taliban before we took them down, and no more wants them back than do we. Iran is even more pleased with the Shia regime we brought to power in Baghdad than we are.

Iran needs technology to restore its depleted oil and gas fields, and an end to sanctions to restore an economy whose disintegration helped put the regime in crisis and lose it the support of its young.

Obama should tell the Israelis, “Cool the jets!” literally.

Gates-Gate Redux

Whew, Finally. The Beer porch takes place.

Here’s the Officer’s video:

I would like to applaud President Obama for bringing Sergeant Crowley, me and our families together. I would also like to thank the President for welcoming my father, Henry Louis Gates, Sr., who for most of his life has been a Republican! My dad turned 96 this past June, and the fact that he worked two jobs every day is the reason that my brother, Dr. Paul Gates, and I were able to receive such splendid educations. I am honored that he chose to join me at the White House, along with my fiancée, my daughters, and my brother.

Sergeant Crowley and I, through an accident of time and place, have been cast together, inextricably, as characters – as metaphors, really – in a thousand narratives about race over which he and I have absolutely no control. Narratives about race are as old as the founding of this great Republic itself, but these new ones have unfolded precisely when Americans signaled to the world our country’s great progress by overcoming centuries of habit and fear, and electing an African American as President. It is incumbent upon Sergeant Crowley and me to utilize the great opportunity that fate has given us to foster greater sympathy among the American public for the daily perils of policing on the one hand, and for the genuine fears of racial profiling on the other hand.

Let me say that I thank God that I live in a country in which police officers put their lives at risk to protect us every day, and, more than ever, I’ve come to understand and appreciate their daily sacrifices on our behalf. I’m also grateful that we live in a country where freedom of speech is a sacrosanct value and I hope that one day we can get to know each other better, as we began to do at the White House this afternoon over beers with President Obama.

Thank God we live in a country where speech is protected, a country which guarantees and defends my right to speak out when I believe my rights have been violated; a country that protects us from arrest when we do express our views, no matter how unpopular.

And thank God that we have a President who can rise above the fray, bridge age-old differences and transform events such as this into a moment in the evolution of our society’s attitudes about race and difference. President Obama is a man who understands tolerance and forgiveness, and our country is blessed to have such a leader.

[…]

Having spent my academic career trying to bridge differences and promote understanding among Americans, I can report that it is far more comfortable being the commentator than being commented upon. At this point, I am hopeful that we can all move on, and that this experience will prove an occasion for education, not recrimination. I know that Sergeant Crowley shares this goal. Both of us are eager to go back to work tomorrow. And it turns out that the President just might have a few other things on his plate as well.

via The Root –  Henry Louis Gates Jr. on his meeting with Sgt. Crowley at the White House..

Great, now can we just please move on to something a bit more important? Like that fact Obama’s Poll numbers are dropping, or the fact that Obama’s HealthCare plan is going down in flames? Or at least something, at bit more substantive?

Because the silly stuff has about me got me great to take vacation from Blogging; Seriously.

Even More living Proof that Liberals are Classless Assholes

I’ve seen some extremely classless assholes in my day. But this one takes the cake:

Rossanne Barr Dressed as Hitler, Baking Burnt Jew Cookies
Roseanne Barr Dressed as Hitler, Baking "Burnt Jew Cookies"

Click here to read the article at Newsbusters.

What a sick and classless bitch! Sick thing is; Liberals think this stuff is funny. Roseanne Barr is a liberal who practices a liberal form of Judaism. But does that excuse this sort of sick nonsense? The answer is no. She ought to be shamed into hiding for producing this sort of racist, Anti-Semitic nonsense.

The Sadly Obligatory "Jungle Monkey" Police officer posting

I really did not want to touch this story; because of it’s nature. But really you are most likely going to be shocked as to my opinion on this.

The Story Via the Boston Globe:

An officer in the Boston Police Department was suspended yesterday for allegedly writing a racially charged e-mail about Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. to colleagues at the National Guard, a law enforcement official said. Mayor Thomas M. Menino compared the officer to a cancer and said he is “gone, g-o-n-e” from the force.

Justin_Barrett_042909.jpg
Justin Barrett

Barrett, a 36-year-old who has been on the job for two years, was stripped of his gun and badge yesterday and faces a termination hearing in the next week, said police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll. He has no previous disciplinary record, she said.

“Yesterday afternoon, Commissioner Davis was made aware that Officer Barrett was the author of correspondence which included racially charged language,” she said. “At that time, Commissioner Davis immediately stripped Officer Barrett of his gun and badge, and at this time we will be moving forward with the hearing process.”

Barrett will receive legal representation from Boston Police Patrolmen’s Assocation, the police officer’s union. A woman who answered the phone at the police association said that union president Thomas J. Nee was not available for comment, but said he would be releasing a statement this evening.

Barrett could not immediately be reached for comment.

You can read what the man wrote, by going right here. Of course, now the man is apologizing and saying he is not a racist and used a poor choice of words.  Not to be crude about it; but ya think? How about you never should have written the stupid e-mail in the first place and passed it around to your friends?  You moron.

Some of you were most likely thinking that I would come to the defense of this douche nozzle. Well, surprise. 🙄

I would not no more defend a person like this, than I would defend some person who robbed a bank and happened to be a police officer and a member of the National Guard. What this idiot forgot is this; Police Officers are servants of the people, not Masters. Some goes for National Guardsman, they are servants of the Government and by proxy the people of the state of Massachusetts. What this idiot did not only reflects bad on the city of Boston, but also on the National Guard. Does this man have the right to feel the way that he does? Yes. But does he have the right to espouse such hatred while  in the employment of the city of Boston and in the deployment of the National Guard? I am afraid that answer is no.  I am sorry, but racism is wrong; whether it is White on Black or Black on White; and yes there is both. The point is that it is still wrong and should not be tolerated by any City, State or Federal Government.

Quote of the Day

At the same time, there may be emotional and practical limits to public patience when confronted with the anti-white vibes of those whom the masses empowered. The public reaction to Obama’s statements about the police “behaving stupidly” in dealing with Gates made me think that while voters will put up with a leftist black president who pushes quotas, they don’t want him to show his true feelings too openly. Obama pushed the envelope, by taking the side of a mouthy race-hustler against an immaculately liberal white policeman and his black fellow-officer. What then happened indicates that some white people are suddenly beginning to wake up to political reality.

Blue Dogs cut a deal and run like hell

Well, I thought it was funny! 😉 😛

The Hill reports:

The Energy and Commerce Committee will resume its markup of healthcare legislation Wednesday afternoon under a deal between Blue Dogs and House leaders, but there will be no floor vote on the legislation before August.

Delaying a vote until after August was a key demand of the Blue Dogs, along with reducing the cost of the bill by $100 billion and allowing states to create health “co-ops” that would compete with the government-run “public option” and private insurers.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was in the negotiations speaking for President Obama.

“We cut the cost of the bill, delayed a floor vote and ensured that the public option will not be forced on anyone,” said Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) who has led the negotiations for the Blue Dogs. “Members will have time to go home to talk to their constituents and actually read the bill.”

Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) said he plans to finish the markup by Friday, the day Congress is scheduled to adjourn.“We cut the cost of the bill, delayed a floor vote and ensured that the public option will not be forced on anyone,” said Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) who has led the negotiations for the Blue Dogs. “Members will have time to go home to talk to their constituents and actually read the bill.”

Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) said he plans to finish the markup by Friday, the day Congress is scheduled to adjourn.

“That is my expectation and hope,” Waxman said.

A couple things come to mind.  I am glad that the Blue Dogs talked the rest of those pinheads out of forcing people to take the public option; that bothered me greatly.  I figured that the “forcing someone” bit would never make it to the final bill.  Because the Democrats know that killing off Private industry, whatever it might be would not be in their best interests.  (Despite what Sean Hannity might say about that…. 😉 😛  )   Those people up on Capitol Hill might act dumb; at times, but in reality they know fully that private industry is the backbone of America.

This is not to say that there are not some far lefty socialists in the Democratic Party; there are plenty of them.  Only difference between those idiots and the Communists in Russia are the party name and the language accents.  However, I am happy to know that there are some moderates still in that party.  Now, do I think this bill will pass?  That is a good question.  I believe that there is going to be some push back, among the far left in the Democratic Party, especially from the netroots people who want a single payer health-care system.  Which I feel personally is an unreasonable goal, as I feel it would bankrupt the Nation.

I also know very well, that there is going to be a massive push by the far right types to kill this bill off entirely.  Whether they succeed or not, is another story.  It is important to note that the forcing language was stripped out and some state ran alternatives are being introduced.  Some still may not like this, but I tend to believe the wind will go out of sails of those who were fiercely opposed to the plan.

I am just happy that they put the thing off till August and are actually are going to read the bill. That my friends is PROGRESS! 😀 😛 😉
