The US continues spying on phones under Obama

There are a ton of opinions on this subject and we’ll get to those in a moment.

But first the story:

The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America’s largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.

The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an “ongoing, daily basis” to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.

Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.

via NSA collecting phone records of millions of Verizon customers daily | World news | The Guardian.

But, there is a big difference this time:

Under the Bush administration, officials in security agencies had disclosed to reporters the large-scale collection of call records data by the NSA, but this is the first time significant and top-secret documents have revealed the continuation of the practice on a massive scale under President Obama.

The unlimited nature of the records being handed over to the NSA is extremely unusual. Fisa court orders typically direct the production of records pertaining to a specific named target who is suspected of being an agent of a terrorist group or foreign state, or a finite set of individually named targets.

Which sounds about right for the Democrats, because they are perfectly fine with Government of a massive scale.

Now there are two very important opinions on this subject that I want you to see. They are same political slant; however, the opinions are very different. Please go check out Michelle Malkin’s take and Ed Morrissey’s take on this subject. While I agree on Michelle Malkin’s assessment, I really do not agree with her narrative at all. If you are smart and read her a good deal, you will know what I am talking about.

Now there is one thing that Ed Morrissey wrote that I, as an Independent, and someone who believes that the war on terror is a very real thing and that we should at least try to keep America safe, without trampling on our constitutional rights. I believe this to be very true and  very profound statement coming from someone like Mr. Morrissey:

Hypocrisy is an unfortunately ubiquitous condition in politics, but in the case of NSA seizing Verizon’s phone records, it’s particularly widespread.  Some of the people expressing outrage for the Obama administration’s efforts at data mining had a different attitude toward it when Bush was in office.  Conversely, we’ll see some people defending Obama who considered Bush evil incarnate for the same thing.

Either way, we’re left with the situation of having the federal government seizing private records without any meaningful civil due process that engages the citizens affected, whether that includes actual wiretaps or just cataloguing our calls and movements.  Perhaps this will move this issue out of the partisan sphere and into a common ground in which we can all work to define exactly how far we’re willing to go in trading privacy for security.  In order to get there, we’d all better recognize the hypocrisy that has abounded on this issue for far too long, and start thinking about higher principles than party affiliation when it comes to national security and constitutional protections.

Now that last part that I underlined, is something I wholeheartedly agree with. When the story broke about Bush and Co. came about the wiretaps, I remember Keith Olbermann doing a special comment on it and I admired him for standing up. Now, where’s Keith? Where are the liberals who thought that this was much too intrusive? Where are they now? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

My hat tip goes to Glenn Greenwald for putting principles over partisanship and getting this story to the masses. Glenn has been about the only liberal who has stood up and pointed out that Obama Administration has continued the policies of the George W. Bush Administration and in some cases; like this one here — has expanded them to an alarming degree. Yes, this is overreach and it is alarming and I do hope the Congress does something about it.

Disaster Exploitation Redux

First it was the Republicans and now the Democrats are getting into the act.

The Video:

The Story via the Daily Caller:

While many Americans were tuned into news coverage of the massive damage from tornadoes ravaging the state of Oklahoma, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming.

Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters.

“So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you care? Why do you, Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, care if we Republicans run off the climate cliff like a bunch of proverbial lemmings and disgrace ourselves? I’ll tell you why. We’re stuck in this together. We are stuck in this together. When cyclones tear up Oklahoma and hurricanes swamp Alabama and wildfires scorch Texas, you come to us, the rest of the country, for billions of dollars to recover. And the damage that your polluters and deniers are doing doesn’t just hit Oklahoma and Alabama and Texas. It hits Rhode Island with floods and storms. It hits Oregon with acidified seas, it hits Montana with dying forests. So, like it or not, we’re in this together.”

Unlike some bloggers who claim to be Independent, I point out when both sides do stupid stuff like this; because it is sick and wrong to exploit a tragic event like this for one’s political agenda. For the record, I do not totally deny climate change; I just happen to think that the science in incomplete and that the whole climate change movement became radically politicized, which I believe personally is harmful. I believe that science is a great thing; but science with a political agenda is dangerous, like unto Nazi propaganda or Soviet propaganda.

UPDATED – It’s official: The Obama Administration is in deep trouble and I am done defending them

My friends, I was very, very wrong and for that, I am terribly sorry. 🙁

I said that I believed that the entire Benghazi, Libya debacle was over-hyped by the Republicans; and I still believe that, to a point.

However, there are many things that have come up since then, which I simply cannot defend.

They are:

  1. The IRS targeting Jewish groups.  – I mean, honestly, what the hell were the IRS and Obama’s people thinking when they let this one happen?
  2. IRS targeting Conservative groups in Washington and Elsewhere. — Did they not know that this would be exposed?
  3. DOJ going after the AP – This is borderline Watergate, so says a watergate player. — Again, what the hell were these people thinking?

My friends, the “Giving the benefit of the doubt” of the President and his Administration by this writer and blogger are over. There is no doubt in my mind that the Obama administration; much like the Administration of George W. Bush, became consumed with a lust for power and abused and exploited the office of President of the United States and the instruments of Governmental office for political purposes.

I leave you with two videos:

Update: Better clip via The American Spectator:

The Democrats have screwed themselves out of ever winning an election; for like oh, maybe the next 2 major election cycles. This is the sad part, Obama and his Administration promised Americans that he would be a clean break from the policies and practices of President George W. Bush and his Administration and sadly, it turns out that Obama and his Administration are just as bad; if not even worse.   As I wrote before, it is sad ending to a Presidency that offered so much to give; but ended up delivering little or nothing at all, in the realm of change.

It is going to be a long, hot, nasty, political summer for America, Americans, Black Liberal Americans and for Washington D.C.. I just hope that cool heads prevail. But, I really do fear the worst in yet to come.

Senator Claire McCaskill said What?!?!?

This also comes via HotAir.com and yes, via Ed Morrissey: (I only link to this one, because like Ed, My jaw went “CLANK!” when I saw this…)

Transcript:

BOB SCHIEFFER, “FACE THE NATION”: Do either of you at this point think there’s a chance that we would have to put U.S. troops in there or that we would want to?

SEN. CLAIRE MCCASKILL (D-MISSOURI): I don’t think you want to ever rule it out because I think this is, kind of, as — as Saxby said, this thing has really deteriorated, and it’s not really at a tipping point. So I don’t think you ever want to say absolutely not. Obviously, we don’t want to do that unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Do either of these two ding-a-lings have any idea what kind of troop commitment that would take? I mean, Syria is a huge Country and we would be fighting all sorts of people. (You know, kind of like….um, Iraq?)

Ed Morrissey sums it up:

We might be able to prevent that with a large-scale invasion and an equally large-scale occupation that lasts a decade or more, if we can get enough NATO members to come along with us and sell it to a Congress that has been acting as though Iraq was a huge mistake. That would include having to quell any insurgencies from Jabhat al-Nusra or related groups, along with fighting Hezbollah again. Anyone up for that kind of commitment? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Funny how the same Democrats who were all like, “The War lost and we need to come home!” during Presidency of George W. Bush are the same ones who are now all, “A yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!” when it comes to Syria and Obama.  I think that some voices of sanity on the left really need to speak up right about now and tell these people, “Um, Folks? We tried that in Iraq and our butts are still sore and we lost like a bunch of people. Lets not do that, okay?

This also proves a few things that I always did suspect; that the Anti-War movement, among the beltway Democrats; unlike the real grassroots Progressive anti-war movement —- was nothing more than an Anti-Bush partisan pet cause. Which quickly dried up once Obama was in office.  I am thinking that Bush knew this and this is why he would not cave to their demands, despite the fact that there was no WMD’s.

To be fair, I have always suspected that Libya was a partisan pet cause among the Republicans; which explains why it never gained in traction in Congress at all.  I mean, there were obviously some mistakes made; but the way the Republicans have drummed that story up, and yes, I do mean via Fox News —- makes me think it falls among partisan lines.  True, many Military people and grassroots Conservatives are concerned about it and rightly so. The Republicans simply made it their pet cause and will in 2014 and 2016; you watch. This is until it starts to generate backlash and they quickly drop it; like when they are elected. Again, watch what happens. I know the game, I have been around it long enough.

On sequestration: The Democrats gamble….and lose

Tell me again why the Democrats put that idiot in the white house again? Hope and….what?

Read on:

The Democrats have lost on sequestration.

That’s the simple reality of Friday’s vote to ease the pain for the Federal Aviation Administration. By assenting to it, Democrats have agreed to sequestration for the foreseeable future.

Recall the Democrats’ original theory of the case: Sequestration was supposed to be so threatening that Republicans would agree to a budget deal that included tax increases rather than permit it to happen. That theory was wrong. The follow-up theory was that the actual pain caused by sequestration would be so great that it would, in a matter of months, push the two sides to agree to a deal. Democrats just proved that theory wrong, too.

In effect, what Democrats said Friday was that in any case where the political pain caused by sequestration becomes unbearable, they will agree to cancel that particular piece of the bill while leaving the rest of the law untouched. The result is that sequestration is no longer particularly politically threatening, but it’s even more unbalanced: Cuts to programs used by the politically powerful will be addressed, but cuts to programs that affects the politically powerless will persist. It’s worth saying this clearly: The pain of sequestration will be concentrated on those who lack political power.

Democrats had other choices, of course. As Politico’s Glenn Thrush pointed out on MSNBC Friday, President Obama could’ve vetoed the FAA bill while standing at a Head Start that’s about to throw needy children out of the program. He could’ve vetoed it from the home of an jobless worker who just saw her benefits cut. Democrats could simply have insisted that the powerful can’t get out of sequestration unless the powerless can, too. But they didn’t — and they show no signs that they’ll start.

But that’s game, then. Absent the willingness to accept the pain of sequestration and use it to overturn the whole policy, Democrats have no leverage to end it.

So, when they’re not being classless, they’re making stupid political moves; like this here. 🙄

Another good reason why I do not vote Democratic Party any longer

Because nothing says asshole and anti-American more than taking a horrible tragic event and using it to score a pathetic political point.

If the tables were turned and this event happened in a LIBERAL part of the Country and a Conservative or libertarian, like myself, printed such tripe; we would be excoriated from one end of the blogosphere to the other. Not to mention the media!  However, because explosion happened in Texas, which is Rick Perry country, and it is printed on a Liberal rag blog; it is business as usual.

Here, go read this idiot’s tripe and go let him know what you think about it.

Quote:

Google Maps satellite view of West Fertilizer and its proximity to West Middle School, along with many houses and apartments.

Who needs pesky safety regulations or zoning laws when there is money to made running a fertilizer plant? Sadly, the small Texas town of West, which is just north of Waco, is suffering the consequences of unregulated free enterprise today, as a massive explosion at West Fertilizer has leveled much of the town. Perhaps the only remotely fortunate aspect of this tragedy is that it occurred at 8 pm local time and so West Middle School, which burned after the explosion, was not full of children.

A look at the satellite image above shows the folly of putting “free enterprise” ahead of sensible zoning laws. At almost 20 miles north of Waco, Texas, one thing that is in abundance in the region is open space (I’ve driven past this spot several times in the last two or three years–it’s desolate), and yet this fertilizer plant is immediately adjacent to a large apartment building (see the photo at the top of this article for how that building fared in the explosion) and very close to a middle school. There is no reason at all for any other building to be within two or three miles of a facility that produces material that is so explosive.

For the record, this blog used to be hosted by some hate-mongering, blonde, bimbo, bitch; who wrote some screen play to a movie that hit it big back in the 1990’s. That is her claim to fame; and with that money, she started this blog. It is filled with hate-mongers like this woman here and an Anti-Semite Italian idiot, who is named TBogg AKA Tom Boggioni; whom I have went after before, because of his hate-mongering shit on that site. It now appears that this woman, is no longer with them; gee, I wonder why? 🙄

I am just going to say it to these idiots and the people who read those blogs; fellas it’s like this here — you are NOT doing your Party any favors for 2014 and 2016. I am an independent blogger and voter; I vote the issues and the person’s ability to lead the Country. Your man up in the White House, he ain’t worth a shit! Which is why I did not vote for him, either damned time. However, my vote is up for grabs in 2014 and 2016. I think you need to think long and very hard about doing dumb shit like this and you want to know why?  Because there are many, many undecided voters out there, that see stuff like this; especially in Texas, and they see what you write.

This is doing zero for your chances in 2014 and 2016. Simply put, you are on the wrong side of this issue and I think you need to reconsider the mocking of an accident that claimed the lives of that many people and injured that many people. It is lame, it is stupid and it will not do anything for you in the upcoming elections. Now, you can ignore me, all you want to; I really do not care. But, I happen to know a bit about this political game; and I have been right before. I suggest that you pull that posting and post and huge apology to those who you have offended, especially the Democratic Party of Texas; which is one of your bigger voting blocs by the way.

Obama cuts into social programs, progressives not amused

I knew this was coming, but it is news:

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say. In a significant shift in fiscal strategy, Mr. Obama on Wednesday will send a budget plan to Capitol Hill that departs from the usual presidential wish list that Republicans typically declare dead on arrival. Instead it will embody the final compromise offer that he made to Speaker John A. Boehner late last year, before Mr. Boehner abandoned negotiations in opposition to the president’s demand for higher taxes from wealthy individuals and some corporations. Congressional Republicans have dug in against any new tax revenues after higher taxes for the affluent were approved at the start of the year. The administration’s hope is to create cracks in Republicans’ antitax resistance, especially in the Senate, as constituents complain about the across-the-board cuts in military and domestic programs that took effect March 1. — Social Programs Face Cutback in Obama Budget – NYTimes.com

Needless to say that the reaction in the progressive blogsphere has not been a good one. Personally, I think that the President has good intentions; but he is cutting the wrong things. I simply do not believe that our Nation’s seniors, like my parents; should be punished because the recklessness of people on Wall Street. We need to get rid of the pork that is laden in these bills that congress just keeps on passing. This will help with the spending problem.

Furthermore, I believe Obama might be doing some damage to the Democratic Party brand. I mean, this guy promised his base that he would actually stand up to the Republicans and what is doing? Capitulating. From what I have seen, this is not going over well with his base at all. The Democrats should be quite worried about this; this will cuase them problems in 2014, and could very well cause them some serious issues in 2016 as well. I mean, why would anyone get exciting about a Democratic Party Presidental candidate, when the last one folded like cardboard?

Just my opinion. 😀

Good: Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s gun ban bill goes down in flames!

Via First Read:

Whither assault weapons ban: “Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said on Monday that a controversial assault weapons ban will not be part of a Democratic gun bill that was expected to reach the Senate floor next month,” Politico notes. “After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored — which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines — wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat.”

My first reaction was one of relief. The bill was idiotic at best. The reason why this bill died is because Democrats know what many of the rest of America know –that America is gun nation; it always has been and always will be. America’s freedom from the British was done at the hands of guns.  Furthermore, the Democrats tried this once before, in the 1990’s and they paid a terrible price for it. Harry Reid might be a liberal Democrat, but he is no idiot; he does want to be reelected to office again.

The point is this; and even my own Democratic Party voting Mother believes this — that outlawing guns of any sort is not going to stop crime. Because the criminals are always going to be able to get guns, no matter what the Government does to try to prevent it. Because there is this thing, called the “Black Market” and it does not go empty very often. Especially seeing how we let some guns walk across the border. I would not be shocked to see some of those guns end up back in the States eventually and someone killed with them.

In closing: Everyone, including me, wants to see an end to shootings, of any sort. But, passing such idiotic bills, such as this one here, is simply not the answer to the problem. The answer is encouraging parents to be involved with their children’s lives. Another good idea, and as much as I know this is going to sound like a cliché; it is the truth —- getting children involved in Church is not a bad idea. It worked for me. I spent most of my young life in Church. If anything at all; it served as good alternative to the streets and the trouble that I could have gotten into in them in Detroit. I did have parents who were strict and involved in my life, but the Church was a big part of that too.

We just cannot legislate our way to an utopian society, it just does not work. It has been tried and it has failed every time.

Just my opinion.

With the White House closing its doors to public tour groups in order to save money for the sequester, it’s worth remembering some of the other costs the White House incurs annually.

Like the “Chief Calligrapher,” Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year.

In all, the White House appears to employ 3 calligraphers for a yearly total of $277,050.

Despite sequestration, there’s been no announcement of the White House scaling back on calligraphers.

Okay, now that you see that I am not lying about how much money that I have; can you see now why this one just pisses me off just a bit? I am sitting here, making exactly jack crap and the Country is on the road to financial ruin, and the President and Congress are playing this silly little sequester shell game with the American people; and they are paying people that much money to write fancy?!?!?  Not only that they are using taxpayer dollars to do so.

This my friends is what the Republicans/Conservatives/Tea Party people are talking about when they mention the disconnect between what is happening in Washington D.C. and in the White House with what is happening in the rest of the Country. This is the stuff that makes me what to continue running this blog, because the same out of touch stupidity that went on in the Bush Administration is still happening in the Obama Administration! Nothing changed, nothing is any different! “Hope and Change” was nothing more than a damned con-job and the gullible American people bought it, because they had Bush fatigue!

I mean, again, I hate to sound like I am a part of the “right-wing” noise machine, but when it gets a bit hard for even a skeptic of the right AND the left to ignore; something is wrong, bad wrong and the President needs to fix his reputation and the Democrats image problem, before they get their asses handed to them in 2014 and 2016.

UPDATED: Detroit continues its swirl down the drain

But simply, this is what happens when you pursue a socialist agenda. This might just be America in a few years.

Via WXYZ-TV:

(WXYZ) – After reviewing the city’s finances, Detroit’s Financial Review Team has concluded that a financial emergency exists within the City of Detroit and it will be up to Governor Rick Snyder to determine if the state should extend a consent agreement with the city to resolve the crisis – or appoint an emergency financial manager.

In the report, the Review Team states there is no satisfactory plan that exists to resolve a serious financial problem.

Here’s the documents:

Review Team Report 2-19-13 by

Det_ReviewTeam Rpt 2-19-13 by

Review Team Report (Supplemental) 2-19-13 by

I would assume that this basically means that Detroit is just downright broke. It’s sad too. Detroit was once a great city, but it has gone downhill since Mayor Young took it over in 1978.

I think all Americans ought to take a hard look at this, and ask yourselves, “Do I want this for America?”

Just my Opinion.

Update: Yikes Indeed. Ordinarily, I would be a bit ticked off about a blog posting of this sort about Detroit. However, I will fully concede the point that Detroit has made a good deal of mistakes over the years; some that predate even me.  One of which was chasing the only honest black man who was Mayor of that city in the 1990’s in favor of a corrupt Democrat Mayor that is now looking at some sweet jail time for his corruption. The second major mistake was the throwing off of the free market capitalism in favor of an entitlement, racially based, socialist system that ended up bankrupting the city. It is a sad thing to say about one’s hometown; but it is, inevitably, the truth. I just hope and pray that Michigan can fix the problem, before things get worse down there. Because sometimes, Detroit’s problems spill over into the suburbs.

Still, it is a bit tough to see the city that I grew up in, as a kid, going through the stuff that it is going through; all the while knowing that it all could have been prevented. It does sadden me to my core. Detroit was once a great city, and now, it is, what it is. Which is nothing short of a crap-hole of socialism, black entitlement and utter waste. If anything, for the United States of America, Detroit should be an example of what not to do, when running a city.

Just my opinion.
